WWD RECOMMENDS: WANAKA RESTAURANTS
The pandemic sure put a hold on the nomadic part of being a digital nomad, and we couldn’t be more grateful to have found a safe, welcoming and beautiful home here in Wanaka / Hawea. It’s been a great place to work from, and we’ve built websites and brands for many local companies and people while we’ve been here. We count ourselves incredibly lucky (and really smart) for choosing Central Otago as our bolt-hole during the apocalypse.
During the last couple of years we’ve had the chance to frequent some really epic places to eat, and have become regulars at many of them. As well-travelled foodies, we take flavour seriously, so it is our great pleasure to recommend these Wanaka faves:
LET’s Eat!
Paloma. New to Wanaka, Paloma brings a much-needed burst of authentic Mexican and Argentinian flavour to New Zealand. FINALLY!!!!!!!! No more bullshit Tex-Mex, this is the real deal. Extensive tequila and mezcal lists, fresh ground corn tortilla, ceviche, tostada, and a Mayan Chocolate Cup that has to be eaten to be believed. The food is made with love. Paloma is nestled in an alleyway off Helwick St, right next door to…
Wee Tart! If you’re looking for some Asian flavours for lunch, this is the spot. An awesome Poke Bowl and a really great Bhan Mi - with either tofu or fried chicken. There is an epic iced coffee with vodka experience and the fries are delicious.
Aki Sushi at the Food Truck Village. Real sushi - the only downside being it’s a tiny food truck with limited stock, so pre-order for lunch or go early. Secret tip: ask for the flamed salmon with mayo. Game changer!
Scroggin. For breakfast, brunch or lunch, Scroggin is a tasty and healthy spot to camp out. Delicious, fresh, local produce and soul food - good for the body and the mind.
Federal Diner (and Deli). The best cheese scones in the world, great coffee, hearty breakfasts and lunches, and a great dinner spot. Locals love it.
Hook. I mean… what’s not to love?! We practically live here. The chef and pizza chef are both from Italy, so the pizza is authentic and delicious. The salmon 5 ways and the pasta dishes are sublime. The kids can run around in the sun and go fishing for their own lunch. The wine list is perfect. Make sure to book a table on sunny days, or try your luck - it’s worth the wait.
Coco Hut. We built the cute website for this awesome Wanaka food truck! Really yummy curry, hand rolled dumplings and incredible duck roti.
Fancy a great weekend lunch idea? Head over to WanaFusion for their dim sum / yum cha experience. It’s delicious.
Have fun out there!
